Frequently Asked Questions!

As much as a camp is FUN and exciting event for the participants, it is sometimes the first time he/she is away from home or the very first time in the outdoors.

Here are a few questions answered!

* Homesickness & Getting Settled

First time campers and their parents sometimes spend a good bit of time worrying about homesickness. Most kids do just fine... but here are some thoughts, which may help minimize potential emotional distress. Before camp Speak openly of possible homesickness. Homesickness is natural, and certain feelings of missing home, parents, pets or friends are pretty normal. Once this is understood, your child may accept homesick feelings with less anxiety.
Avoid statements like "I'm going to be so lonely without you!" Don't make your child feel guilty about going away.

Heighten your child's interest by pointing out some of the exciting things you remember about your own camping experience or things you did in summer. Be sure to be positive about how you were able to handle being away from your mom and dad.

* Phone Calls

During camp phone calls are generally not a good idea. Some campers may be doing just fine till the sound of a parent's voice triggers a setback unexpected by either party. If for some reason you do wind up on the phone with a crying, homesick child, you need to be supportive, encouraging, positive about his ability to adjust. At any times our phones will be active and you can call us to get the report on your child's progress.

Our approach is to...
1 Be supportive, encouraging, empathetic and available to talk things out.
2 Try to identify and solve any underlying problems (being teased, perhaps) or help him learn to live with the insoluble ones (it's raining, the water's cold, etc.).
3 Keep you informed.

*Facilities:

The camps provide outdoor living which is simple and nature friendly, sometimes in tents and sometimes in forest/nature homes, the facilities are basic. Sleeping bags are provided to each participant and campsites are as comfortable as they make it. Most of our camps have natural living environment – viz sleeping in tents under the sky or with simple sleeping arrangements. Which also means, we wash ourselves in nature streams and go for nature calls in nature!

The idea is to give children experience of being fully into the outdoors, away from our routine and “too comfortable” urban lifestyle.

*Food

You will find basic food in our camps. Either we cook or we tie up with the local residents to cook food for us – in any which way the food is simple and nutritious. Varieties are kept to minimum, the idea is not to cater to ‘choices” - rather – whatever is available we “ALL” share and eat/ drink that and enjoy it.

* Medical facilities

All camp locations are not very far from the city limits. We have a list of all medical centers close to camp. Also we carry basic first aid on the camp and all our instructors are trained in basic first aid. During the camps first aid kits are carried and the trainers are trained to give basic first aid immediately.

* Packaging his/her BAGS

We encourage you to allow them to pack their bags. This helps them know where their things are and thus makes them more in charge. Most times we notice children NOT using half the things they carry to camp, but have been lugging it around for most part of the camp. Please avoid this and pack according to the list given with the enrollment KIT.

* Camp Guidelines

Behavior at camp has never been the most important thing. The idea after all is to have fun and enjoy, but doing it at the expense of others feelings is a definite NO NO. Ragging others, bullying and hurting others feeling is definitely not acceptable at camp. We take up these issues at the common Circle Time at regular intervals, setting codes and making children aware of their feelings.

We take this very seriously and if the need be we will have to call upon the parents to come and take his/her child back home. For us every child's feelings are important and tolerance to hurting others is low.

* How long has The OUTDOOR SCHOOL Summer Camp been in business?

The Outdoor School summer camp has been conducting camps from Bangalore and Mysore to different areas around South India. This is the fifth Summer Camp this year, but apart from Summer events , we do have programs around the year. Our camps vary from a day out camp to longer camps. We host camps for both adults and children.
